In some cases, holiday debt does not incur because of overspending on holiday gifts. The source is actually holiday travel. If you need to travel during the holidays, planning ahead can save you a lot of money.

A good rule of thumb is to set the dates for air travel sooner than later and buy the ticket(s) early. The earlier the ticket is bought, the better the deal. Do not wait until the last minute! The prices go up steeply the closer to the date of flight and chances are the flight will be at obscure times that are very inconvenient.

Before you make any ticket purchases, check with all the leading travel websites, as their ticket prices can vary quite a bit. It never hurts to call a travel agent and check ticket prices with them. In some cases, they may be able to get you a better deal.

The amount of money for a plane ticket has increased steadily over the past few years. Even though gas prices are higher than they were a few years ago, it may be cheaper to drive than fly.

There are websites that specialize in reporting gas prices throughout the country. By checking the prices in the cities along your route, you can estimate the costs of a road trip and see if it will be easier to drive to your destination.

Of course, when estimating these costs, be sure to include the prices of any hotel rooms that you will need along the way, as well as food. However, by packing a cooler of drinks and sandwiches, you will be able to avoid roadside restaurants and save a bit of money.

Just like with gift buying, it will be easier on your budget to save for your holiday travel throughout the year. You may want to consider opening up a savings account reserved just for this purpose and having your bank automatically deposit a certain amount into the account each month from your primary account.

By saving throughout the year and researching what travel methods will be best on your budget, you will be able to enjoy time with family and friends without running into holiday debt along the way.
