lastminute.jpgA simple way to avoid holiday debt, as well as huge crowds at the department stores, is by giving homemade gifts. Not only are they less expensive than buying retail goods, giving someone a homemade gift is certainly more personal.

One idea is to create a different ornament each year and give those out as gifts. You don’t have to be a very crafty person to do this; many websites offer directions for quick and simple decorations. People tend to treasure these and look forward to receiving each year’s new edition.

Aside from ornaments, other homemade holiday offerings could include, scrapbooks of photos taken throughout the year, as well as pampering gifts such as handmade soaps and candles.

In many cases, you won’t need to spend a lot of time or money stocking up on supplies to make these items, as most craft store offer kits that come with everything you’ll need. By keeping an eye on the stores weekly sales, you can buy these kits at a big savings, create the items throughout the year, and then give them away during the holidays.

Edible gifts are also a big hit, as everyone loves to eat delicious treats during the holidays. You are in no way limited to giving out sweet treats, such as cookies and candy. You could find some very pretty oil dispensers at a home store, and create your own infused olive oil by filling each dispenser with oil and garlic, lemon zest, rosemary, or other herbs.

Another simple to make edible treat is spiced nuts. Just take some different types of nuts and roast them in a pan on the stove for a few minutes. In another pan, melt a few tablespoons of butter and mix in some of your favorite spices. Once the butter is melted, pour it over the nuts and mix to coat each nut with the flavor. Once cooled, simply pack the nuts into cute containers.

When it comes to homemade holiday gifts, your choices are limitless. Just remember to start early as to give yourself enough time to complete the projects!
